ABSTRACT is a collection of 10 hand knit designs by Georgia Farrell.
All inspired by her love of Architecture, Georgia created this collection in Rowan’s Felted Tweed and Kidsilk Haze yarns! We are all familiar with using these yarns held together…..Georgia does that but also sometimes uses one to accent the other.
DEPTH**
The Depth pullover uses two shades of Kidsilk Haze (Majestic and Pearl) held together to create the fabric….it’s knit flat in pieces.
The back is stocking stitch…..while the front is charted out with a diagonal textural pattern using purls in one direction, and twisted stitches and slipped stitches to define the other diagonal element.
This design is completed by duplicate stitching over those diagonal stitches with shades of Felted Tweed. This added detail is totally optional of course, and I think it would be lovely done in shades of Kidsilk Haze (held double of course). I’d be tempted to use just one accent shade rather than the 3 as shown. Isn’t knitting wonderful? We can easily customize our knits to suit our particular taste!
REFLECT ***
Using KSH and Felted Tweed held together, the body has that two stitch cable and slipped stitch detail from Depth, separating areas of stocking and reverse stocking stitch.
An icord is is incorporated into the front edges…..and the rib is picked up and knit out!
The sleeves are plain reverse stocking stitch.
I love all of the textures used in this design, and the various shades of yarn used to colour block the garment. Of course, you could make it all one shade for a more subtle look. If that front button band is to avant-garde for you, you could make it full length for a more sophisticated classic garment and let the texture of the fabric shine!
PLANE ***
Plane is knit entirely in Felted Tweed, using a 5 shade palette. The garment is knit in pieces and is oversized with drop shoulders. With the colour blocking and textural stitch accents, this would be an intriguing knit.
I can imagine lounging around in this with leggings on a Sunday afternoon! OR, with boots and a scarf, it would be a great outfit to go out with your girlfriends!
LIGHT**
Using comparable shades of Kidsilk Haze and Felted Tweed, this V neck pullover is designed to have a closer fit, and features blocks and diagonal striping of reverse stocking stitch as accents. The Centre front uses the slip stitch accent which is used throughout this design.
Watch the finished length on this one unless you like your sweaters cropped. For my size, it is only 18-3/4” long and that is a wee bit short for my taste!
BLOCK
Cardigan ****
Scarf **
I love it when a sweater has an accent accessory like this!
Both designs use 7 shades of Kidsilk Haze, with small bits of Felted Tweed for the embellishments,
The Kidsilk Haze is used double throughout.
I totally LOVE this design and am partial to a big cosy knit! BUT, experience has shown me that maybe it’s a good idea to try a smaller project using a technique before tackling a huge project!
This design has intarsia blocks of colour and then duplicate stitched accents….but I have to say it looks entirely doable on 4mm needles!
This design is totally charted out for you - 12 pages of charts! (10 for the coat, 2 for the scarf)
Thank you Rowan!
POSITION***
Knit in 3 shades of Felted Tweed, the Position pullover is knit in pieces….
The straight boxy shape of the body and the modified drop shoulder sleeve would make this a super comfortable sweater to wear….and flattering to most of us!
This design also features the intarsia colour blocking and textural stitches used throughout this collection.
LINES***
Lines is knit using Felted Tweed and Kidsilk Haze together, knit in pieces. 5 shades of each yarn are used.
Stripes are created with the intarsia technique. This design is fully charted out for you!
This sort of boggles my mind frankly….so you would have 4 stripes with 3 sections of the main colours in between???
The shape of this cardigan is unique - there is NO centre back neck shaping….so when you wear it, the shoulder seams are pushed to the back of your shoulders. The fronts are knit longer to compensate so that you don’t get that pulled up waterfall front that so many sweaters have….
I think this is great because for me, a sweater that pulls up in the front adds bulk where I don’t want it.
ASYMMETRY****
I love this design for it’s graphic details!
The armholes are different, look at that bottom edge! Colour blocking, textured knitting and duplicate stitch. This vest? Tabard? Has it all!
SHADOW***
Shadow is the cover design - it uses 3 shades of felted tweed to create this A line raglan sleeve pullover. The colour blocking is accented with areas of reverse stocking stitch. I love the colour combination used.
COMPOSITE**
The body of this cardigan is knit with one strand each of Kidsilk Haze and Felted Tweed. The edge accent is knit with 2 strands of Kidsilk Haze.
Knit in pieces, this cardigan is knit using a variety of textural stitches. The front band is picked up and knit out, ending with that fabulous Eve Green edge!
I sort of love these designs…..while they have experience ratings, I think that they are totally knittable designs, nothing too challenging to put the knitter off! (Well, maybe intarsia stripes LOL).
I hope my detailed overview of the designs in Georgia Farrell’s new publication ABSTRACT gives you the information that you need to decide which one of these designs is for you!

Designing a collecting takes time, and Georgia started this collection early in 2020 while we were all “staying home” and she obviously put her time to good use.
FYI - All the designs are done in the recently updated Rowan size range of 9 sizes (to fit from 28-62” busts).

I am having trouble understanding the chart for Rowan Reflect, specifically reading the slashed squares(they don’t match up to the key given,). Any feedback would be appreciated.
