Day 1 - Textile Museum, Scalloway Castle

7:15 am, Wednesday, July 19

We're in Lerwick harbour -- and while all of the cars, freight and luggage is being off loaded, we're having breakfast in the Carvery. Life is sure tough.

Upon disembarking, we were met by Robert, of Jamieson's bus hire. Peter Jamieson (of Jamieson's Spinning) was there too (no relation) -- to help organize our luggage to Busta -- our luggage went off without us and we jumped right into our Shetland tour!

First stop -- the Shetland Textile Working Museum at Weisdale Mill, where we were given a tour of the current exhibit by Margaret Stuart. As the museum is closing to move to another location, this year they are featuring "Glimpses from the past 1996 - 2006" - small excerpts from past exhibitions -- Shetland Lace, Shetland wool, Shetland Taatit Rugs, Women in War Time, etc. -- it was a fabulous exhibit -- I'm not sure where the Textile Museum is moving to, I"ll have to find out.

After lunch at the Fisheries College cafeteria, we headed off to Scalloway to visit the Museum and Castle there. The museum was closed (we called these little annoyances "Shetland emergencies"). Our trip itinerary had the following disclaimer at the bottom....

Plans may change due to weather, or the always possible "Shetland emergency".
Scalloway Castle -- I love castles, abbeys, any kind of ruins -- if it's quiet enough, you can imagine what it must have been like to live in these places.
Here's a photo looking down on the main hall. That fireplace is HUGE!
I was fascinated by these turret type extrusions at the corner of the building -- I'm fascinated with Harry Potter right? and these things remind me of the extensions on the Hogwarts castle -- where Dumbledore's office is? I know, I'm getting off of the subject.I could have spent longer here, but it was our first day on Shetland, we were excited, and we wanted to get to Busta House! All of the rooms in the Busta House have Shetland geographical names -- ours was Whalsay, in the Garden Wing -- here's the view from our window!
Funny thing about the Busta House -- there have been a lot of additions over the year -- people kept getting lost -- it paid to keep your door locked!

  5. I've been keeping my eye on this trip as a future plan for myself. There is no new info on their site for a trip for next year. Ask if they are going to do this again next year.
